Engr. Adedeji Doherty was born on 9th March 1962, into the Doherty family of Popo Aguda on Lagos Island — a lineage of merchants, lawyers and public servants tracing back to J.H. Doherty, the prince-merchant of Alakoro, and his son T.A. Doherty, the first senator to represent Lagos and a key advocate for its creation as an independent state. He trained as an engineer in the United States, returned home in 1986, and spent the years since building businesses from the ground up — starting with a single grain-processing operation that grew into the DAIN Group of Companies — while rising through the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party over more than two decades of service.
He is the son of Dr. Tunji Julius Doherty, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, and Elizabeth Doherty, a London-trained midwife tutor. He attended Maryhill Convent School, a year at Loyola College, and CMS Grammar School, Bariga, from 1975 to 1980, where he excelled as an all-rounder in sports and served as President of the Junior Literary and Debating Society. He went on to Central State University, Xenia, Ohio, earning an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a B.Sc. in Industrial Technology in 1986 — a year working on a farm alongside his professor there sparked the lifelong interest in mechanised agriculture and grain processing that would define his first business.
Back in Nigeria, he completed his NYSC at Triplex Safety Glass supervising quality control on the toughened-glass production line, then spent several years at Cargill Nigeria Ltd as Southern Purchasing Manager, overseeing grain and cocoa logistics, warehousing and export across the south of the country. In 1986 he founded Dohagro Allied International, pioneering a mobile grain-shelling and drying service that travelled farm to farm across Oyo, Ilorin, Fiditi, Awe, Iwo, Shaki, Ogbomosho and beyond — tackling post-harvest grain loss at its source for local farming communities. That business grew into the DAIN Group of Companies, now encompassing Timicom Telecommunications, Agric and Engineering Construction, Lybrand Chemicals, Oluwatosin Motors, Dain Cars, Dain Manufacturing and Dain Events — forty years of building enterprises that create jobs rather than simply chase them.
He joined the Peoples Democratic Party in 1999 and has never defected. He has contested the party's Lagos State governorship primary in 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, and served the party in roles spanning Zonal Secretary, Zonal Organising Secretary and Zonal Financial Secretary for the South-West, Lagos State PDP Chairman, Acting National Vice-Chairman South-West, and — today — National Vice-Chairman, South-West, and a member of the party's Board of Trustees. In 2026, after five primary contests and nearly three decades of party service, he finally secured the PDP's Lagos State governorship candidacy for the 2027 election — persistence, he says, is simply what loyalty looks like when it's tested. He is married to Abiola Doherty and they have children.
